Mashups and API: it seems the majority of mashups use Google maps; I found one called Rocky Horror Showings list (not necessarily handy for the medical library)
Rollyo may be very useful, but the number of hits for privacy was pretty huge. I found it interesting that the desire for privacy seems to be predominant in boomers and older, not so much with the younger generations. Hard for me to get away from the privacy issue; for this course alone, I have about 10 logins and passwords, and am not sure that that will do me much good in the end.
Found some really useful sites by searching Gabe's Rollyo.

MLA CE week 4
Finally finishing up the Social Bookmarking exercises. del.icio.us could be a useful tool for research, if only to see what is out there that others have found. I'm not sure why the same page comes up several times in a particular search, but that seems to be a minor drawback. I was not able to add the del.icio.us tool to my browser, as I am using a public library computer. Of the sites I tagged, the tags seemed pretty common. It would be useful for a reference librarian in terms of having access to the bookmarks from any location.
MLA CE week 6
I enjoyed having the experience of using Flickr, was able to post to my blog by making the photo public, but I have not been able to figure out how to get the photo to Facebook on the public computer I use for the class. I could upload a photo from a CD, but can't figure out how to get it from Flickr. I've seen some nice photos on library web pages, and I think sharing photos from a social occasion is useful, but I'm not sure how useful the photo sharing is in general for medical libraries.
MLA CE week 5
I love the online document tools; having used an old iMAC for many years, my family has always had the problem of creating and transmitting Word compatible documents. I think that for all software, it may be in the future, but not that soon. The question is whether these services will remain available, and whether there will be costs associated with them later. They would definitely be useful for larger libraries or library organizations; not sure about the one-person library.

MLA CE week 7
I have now managed to do week 7 exercises as well! The number of podcasts and YouTube videos is totally overwhelming. I enjoyed the podcasts and videos dealing with library orientation and using databases. There are certainly some useful medical podcasts and videos. I wonder, though, if you can really trust what you hear and see. I think as librarians we would have to evaluate the source.
MLA CE week 3
I've finally completed the Social Networking week! I think Social Networking could be helpful in connecting librarians, but I still think there are some privacy issues as you increase the size of the network. It was fun to find others on Facebook, but I tend to prefer communicating with one person at a time for most purposes. I think it is good for academic libraries to have a presence on the sites the students frequent, but not sure if it would be useful for a hospital (also privacy concerns) I was doing the exercises from a public library computer, so I felt a bit uncomfortable with the privacy issue, but I didn't see much point in making up a fake name.

MLA CE week 2
Enjoyed setting up MLANO wiki, but once everyone is in, I'd like to make it private and let everyone be a writer.
difference between wiki and blog--blogs are in chronological sequence while wikis seem more amenable to organizing by subject. Despite many, many attempts, I have not been able to get the link to my wiki, MLANO wiki, to work on the class wiki. Wiki seems like a better place to share information. I am uncomfortable with the privacy issues of both, though it seems that people don't have to identify themselves on my wiki. I want to create more pages on the wiki, but haven't had a chance to play with it on the public library computers I use.

MLA CE week 1
I'm getting a bit of a late start due to a hand injury and having to use a public library computer. I was not able to get an RSS feed from PubMed into Google Reader, but I see that in the FAQs. I'm currently unemployed, but I think RSS feeds from journals and PubMed would have been useful in my former library (now closed) if the institution network would have allowed them.
MLA CE class blog
I'm going to use this blog for the MLA CE class. As I'm unemployed at the moment, I may not be able to apply the course materials to an actual library setting, but I hope to be able to do that in the near future.
